Greta and Riley are lying on a motel bed together. Music is playing in the background. They look at each other and kiss. They sit up and are about to kiss again when Riley starts undressing. The music fades and Greta looks upset.
GRETA: Uh, stop. Uh...
RILEY: What?
GRETA: No, uh... N-No, what are you doing?
RILEY: Um... Aren't... Aren't we...
GRETA: No! I-I don't... I don't want this. I'm not like you. I don't hook up. I don't just hook up!
Riley scoffs. She looks hurt.
RILEY: Th-That's n... That's not what I... Oh, Jesus. Why would you even say that? W-W-What is happening right now? ( Under breath ) Fսck.
Riley starts getting dressed again.
RILEY: Ugh!
Riley storms out of the room, frustrated.
Chester and Riley are driving in Chester's car.
CHESTER: Whatever. But you are going to X-Files, right?
Riley doesn't say anything.
CHESTER: No, no, stop. Stop. You're going!
RILEY: Does Greta even want me there?
CHESTER: Yes! What was the motel drama?
RILEY: She just freaked out a little bit.
CHESTER: (unconvinced) Mm-mm. Something else. I know you, sis.
RILEY: I don't really know where we stand or what she wants. Or... I - I don't, I mean I don't know what I want. Whatever. What do you think?
CHESTER: I think lesbians are exhausting.
RILEY: I'm not a lesbian.
CHESTER: Yeah, well, you have that over-talk-y smother-y lesbian thing down.
RILEY: If that is your definition, you are the biggest lesbian in all of Anaheim.
Chester brakes the car suddenly, causing Riley to spill her drink.
RILEY: You cսոt!
Chester and Greta are hanging out at school, when they see Riley walking in.
CHESTER: (to Greta) Will you just pin her down and wrap your legs around her face?
Greta sighs, exasperated.
CHESTER: What?
GRETA: It's just like - why is everything always so sеxual? Where are you going with Bo?
CHESTER: Uh... Roller skating. Which I'm trash at, but at least he'll be forced to hold my hand... Wait, you think it's a bad choice?
GRETA: Hold up. Are you nervous?
CHESTER: Fսck you, yes! Yes, I'm nervous! He's not some older guy who's never gonna be into me or some suck-my-fisting-dick Grindr guy - sorry - he's like, actual boyfriend material.
Greta and Luz are hanging out and laughing. Greta checks her phone and sees a series of texts from her aunt reading "Where r u?", "Where the fuck r u?", "It's 6:30", "!!!!!", "ANSWER". She looks upset and sighs.
LUZ: You gotta be home?
GRETA: My mom wanted me to meet some cousin.
LUZ: Wait, is your mom back?
GRETA: No, but she's just still trying to control me.
LUZ: Yeah. Also, when they think something's up, but they don't know, it's worse. At least, it was for me. I finally had to be like, "Mom, this is it. This is where I'm at. This is how it's gonna go." And then she just stopped.
GRETA: Yeah, I don't know if that's gonna work for me.
LUZ: That's what I'm saying. It's kinda more your call. But also, I'm an asshоlе, so...
GRETA: (laughing) No, you're not.
LUZ: I actually am. I think if you like me, even though I'm an asshоlе, it's probably better than you liking me 'cause you think I'm not an asshоlе.
Pause.
LUZ: What's with, um, you and Riley?
GRETA: Uh... What do you mean?
LUZ: You guys together, or...?
GRETA: Not really, no.
LUZ: Yeah, I got that feeling. So, does that mean I can kiss you? 'Cause I really want to.
Greta thinks for a second, unsure. Then she smiles.
GRETA: (suddenly confident) No.
LUZ: No?
GRETA: No.
LUZ: 'Cause why?
GRETA: 'Cause I don't know you.
LUZ: (impressed) See? You got some asshоlе in you.
GRETA: Um... Can you give me a ride home?
Greta is sitting in the hall at school, reading a book. Luz comes up to her.
LUZ: So studious!
Luz reaches over and tucks Greta's hair behind her ear, and Greta backs away from her.
LUZ: (confused) Is this, like, a secret?
GRETA: No.
LUZ: I'll see you later, okay?
GRETA: Hold up.
LUZ: Yeah, I don't know. Like, I've done the whole closeted girl thing before, and it's just destined for too much drama and sneaking around and, like, a million of the same conversations in a row, you know?
GRETA: Come for dinner. Thursday? I mean, my mom says that she wants to meet everyone.
LUZ: Everyone me?
Greta smiles and nods.
LUZ: Cool. Let's do it.
Greta and her aunt Ana are talking about the weird love triangle situation going on with Greta, Luz, and Riley.
ANA: First of all, what?! Didn't you say she [Luz] was an asshоlе? Didn't she say she was an asshоlе? And what the fսck with Riley?
GRETA: Like, I told you six thousand times, where she wants to go is just, like... not where I want to.
ANA: Fine. But then you invite this... pendejita to meet your mother?
GRETA: She keeps saying she wants to be part of my life and meet all my new friends since she was gone.
ANA: Since when is la pendejita your friend? I think you're trying to say something to your mother without saying it.
Greta and Luz are walking down the street together.
LUZ: I think your mom liked me.
They both laugh
LUZ: Come here.
GRETA: (laughing) What are you doing?
Luz goes to kiss her, but Greta backs away.
LUZ: What?
Cut to Riley watching this go down from the car.
Greta and Luz are sitting in the audience for Ana's show. Luz goes to stroke Greta's hair, and Greta shrinks back from her.
LUZ: What's up with you?
GRETA: What do you mean?
LUZ: Is it 'cause Riley's here?
GRETA: No! What? No.
LUZ: Are you actually into girls?
GRETA: I mean, yeah.
LUZ: It's weird, 'cause I feel like you do like me.
GRETA: Definitely.
Pause.
LUZ: I think you'll figure it out. I'm gonna head out, okay?
GRETA: (concerned) Really?
Luz stands up, blows her a kiss, and walks off. Greta looks upset.
Cut to Greta sitting backstage and talking to Arianna.
GRETA: Yeah, I just feel, like, I don't know, dumb.
ARIANNA: Well, I'm the dumb bitch with two best friends dating the same guy. But Luz and you... She, to me, is like... salt. And you're more cinnamon.
GRETA: I don't know. Maybe it was how different she is that I liked? But, um... I'm starting to feel like there's something really wrong with me.
ARIANNA: Maybe you just haven't figured out what your thing is. There are people who cսm to women squishing cake between their toes.
GRETA: Yeah, I don't know if that's gonna be my thing.
ARIANNA: My point is, it's okay, whatever your thing is.
Greta smiles at her.
ARIANNA: You remember in second grade, we did that weird Thanksgiving play and were both in the same pilgrim family and had to pretend to be starving?
GRETA: Yeah?
ARIANNA: (laughing) I don't know why, I just thought of it. You know, I'm on the Decor Committee for the Winter Formal, and I was thinking about not going just to be petty on multiple levels, but I actually want to, if I'm being honest. Plus, I get two free tickets, so if you don't have someone, I'd love to be your sloppy seconds. It's not a pity ask. That's... You doing me a favor.
GRETA: I would actually really love that.
Greta and Arianna walk back out to the audience.
GRETA: One sec. I'll meet you at the table, okay?
Greta walks up to Riley.
RILEY: Hey. I'm about to be done for the night. But, actually, um, if this is weird, you should just tell me, but, um, I'm happy for you and Luz. Um... yeah. I mean, it's kind of strange, but... Anyway, um, I took a photo of you guys, um, that I can text you if... if you want.
GRETA: I don't want it.
RILEY: Okay. Got it.
GRETA: No. It's not, um, that. Um, she's not my... We're not... A-Anyway, um, so that night when... I mean, like, when we were, um, on the trip...
RILEY: Mm?
Greta sighs.
GRETA: I don't know what it is exactly, but (Sighs) one thing I do know is that... it wasn't me not liking you.
Riley looks confused.
Riley goes up to Greta at a party.
RILEY: Um... What's wrong with me? 'Cause, like, I thought that - I, like, thought that you liked me, so just, like, what's - what's wrong with -
GRETA: Nothing. Um, there's nothing wrong with you.
Greta takes a deep breath.
GRETA: Actually... I-I-I wanted to tell you that -
MEGAN: (interrupting) Hi! Having fun?
GRETA: I-I'm gonna -
Greta leaves.
Greta walks in on Riley crying in her mum's room. She runs up and hugs her.
GRETA: I'm sorry for not being a better friend.
RILEY: What? W-- No - I'm - I'm the one who's always keeping things to myself. I need to be a lot better at - at that. And about that, did - did Luz -
GRETA: Wait. Uh, can I say something first? 'Cause if I don't say it right now, I might not. So, um... that thing that y-you asked me before at the pre-party? There's something I've been noticing about myself. I - I can like someone. Like, really like them. But when it comes to kissing or making out or whatever, I don't want that.
RILEY: Oh.
GRETA: So I don't know how it could work, like, between us. Even if you wanted it to. Um, what I said that night wasn't 'cause of me not liking you. 'Cause I never stopped liking you. Um, I actually, um... I love you.
RILEY: I love - I love you.
They both laugh.
RILEY: Um... But, uh, that night at the motel, um, I - I left after -
They're interrupted by the sound of static feedback and screaming from outside.
